THE 90's AND THE 2000's

Many important facts took place in the world during the 90’s and 2000’s which made our society to change. Firstly we can’t forget that Germany reunified after the Second World War, when Germany was divided into two different countries, the capitalist West Germany and the communist East Germany. In 1991 the USSR ceased to exist and split into different countries.

Some years later in the USA, Bill Clinton was appointed president. As for Biology, the first animal was cloned: it was "Dolly" the sheep.
clinton.jpg dolly.jpg
In 2000, Mr. George W. Bush was appointed President of the USA, after a victory of less than 1.000 votes! In 2001, the USA suffered the worst terrorist attack in their history to the Twin Towers in New York.

twin towers.jpg firemen.jpg
After this attack, the Iraq war began. The terrorist group Al-Qaeda didn’t agree to hand over their leader, Osama bin Laden, to the American troops, so the USA started their fight against this terrorist group around the world. He was finally killed by American soldiers on the 1st May 2011.

In 2002, some European countries decided to create a new currency which would include all of them. This new currency was called Euro.

irak war.jpg coins.jpg
In 2005, the day after London was chosen as the city to hold the next Olympic Games, different terrorist attacks in the metro took place. Some years later, in 2007 and 2008 a huge economical crisis began. In 2008, Mr. Barack Obama won the elections in the USA and became the first Black president in the history of that country.

obama.jpg time.jpg
That same year, a terrible pandemic of Influenza A virus broke out and many people died around the world. On another level Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, died on the 25th of June 2009 of a cardiac arrest caused by an overdose of Propofol, a powerful anaesthetic.

In 2011, a social revolution broke out in some Arab countries like in Tunis, where their former president Ben Ali had to flee and exile in Saudi Arabia. Some months later, this social revolution repeated in Syria, where a civil war broke out between the government of president Bashar al-Assad and the rebels. Unfortunately this war is not over yet, and has caused many deaths and suffering to the Syrian population.

The most important fact happened in 2014 up to now has been a diplomatic crisis in Crimea, a peninsula belonging to the Republic of Ukraine. Around 90% of its population are Russians and demanded to be part of this country instead. After a not recognized referendum by the international community, Crimea achieved its independence from Ukraine and became a republic inside the Russian Federation.

NIRVANA

indir.jpg

Nirvana was an American alternative rock band in the 1990s. They were one of the most successful and influential bands of that time. Since they formed, they have sold over 75 million records all over the world. They played a style of rock music known as grunge, which was highly influenced by 1980s alternative rock, 1970s punk, and heavy metal. Grunge became more commercially successful than the previous punk rock, as promoted to the world by Sub Pop Records. Nirvana greatly affected the style of other grunge bands such as Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains. They split up after their lead singer Kurt Cobain died in 1994 after he shot himself in the face with a shotgun.
Nirvana started in Aberdeen, Washington in 1987 when singer Kurt Cobain and the bassist Krist Novoselic met and decided to form a band. The band had 5 different drummers until they found Dave Grohl. They released their first studio album, Bleach, in 1989, with Chad Channing playing drums.

Their second album, Nevermind, released in 1991, was a massive success. Many people bought it, and it had the top spot on many music charts. It featured the song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" which was also a very big hit. In February 1992 Kurt married rock singer Courtney Love. The band caused controversy in 1992 when they played a song called "Rape Me" on MTV. Many people found this offensive. Around this time, Kurt also started taking many illegal drugs, including heroin.

Smells like teen spirit

Come as you are

All apologies (from the MTV Unplugged)

Nirvana released another album called In Utero, in 1993 and went on tour in Europe. Many of the dates were cancelled because Cobain was drinking too much alcohol and taking too many drugs. He was taken into a rehab center to end his addiction to drugs but he ran away. Kurt cobain decided to commit suicide and Eventually, he was found dead in his home on Friday, April 8, 1994 by an electrician. The police decided that he committed suicide with a shotgun. The other band members were shocked by this, Kurt was given the name "Shotgun Cobain," and Nirvana officially split up.

Nirvana has released more compilation albums than regular, or studio, albums. After Nirvana broke up, Dave Grohl started a new band called Foo Fighters. Krist Novoselic became interested in politics and also kept making music. He was the bassist for Flipper, which Kurt Cobain was a fan of, but recently left the band.

THE CRANBERRIES

The band had a great success in the 1990s with their first album Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?. The band formed 1989 in Limerick, Ireland and has four members Noel Hogan (lead guitar), Fergal Lawler (drums and percussion), Mike Hogan (bass guitar) and Dolores O'Riordan (lead vocals, rhythm and acoustic guitars, keyboards). They play alternative rock with elements of indie pop and irish traditional music.
They became famous as they were touring with Suede and when their videos were broadcasted on MTV. The first songs that became a success in 1993 were Linger and Dreams:

The song Zombie is a song written by Dolores O'Riordan and became the most successful song of the album No need to argue. It was released in September 1994 and won the 1995 Europe MTV Music Award. It is a protest song and was written for two boys that were the victims of an IRA bombing.

Less successful than Zombie but still very popular is the ballad Ode to my family from the same album.

In 1999 they release their fourth album Bury the Hatchet and the single The animal instinct peaked in many european countries.

In 2003 they stopped working together in order to pursuit their own careers and in 2009 they reunited and recorded the Album Roses.

Red Hot Chili Peppers are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1983. The group's musical style primarily consists of rock with an emphasis on funk, as well as elements from other genres such as punk rock and psychedelic rock. Currently, the band consists of founding members Anthony Kiedis (vocals) and Michael "Flea" Balzary (bass), longtime drummer Chad Smith, and guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, who joined in late 2009, following the departure of John Frusciante.
The album Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991) became the band's first commercial success. Frusciante grew uncomfortable with the success of the band and left abruptly in 1992, in the middle of the world tour.
After recruiting guitarist Arik Marshall to complete the tour, Kiedis, Flea, and Smith employed Jesse Tobias though after a few weeks he was replaced by Dave Navarro of Jane's Addiction for their subsequent album, One Hot Minute (1995). Frusciante rejoined the band that same year at Flea's request. The reunited quartet returned to the studio to record Californication (1999), which became the band's biggest commercial success with 15 million copies worldwide. That album was followed three years later by By the Way (2002), and then four years later by the double album Stadium Arcadium (2006), their first number one album in America. In 2010 the band spent the year and a half recording their tenth studio album, I'm with You, which was released in 2011 and topped the charts in 18 different countries.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Under the Bridge

Sometimes I feel
Like I don't have a partner
Sometimes I feel
Like my only friend
Is the city I live in
The city of angels
Lonely as I am
Together we cry

I drive on her streets
'Cause she's my companion
I walk through her hills
'Cause she knows who I am
She sees my good deeds
And she kisses me windy
I never worry
Now that is a lie

I don't ever want to feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way
I don't ever want to feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way (yeah yeah)

It's hard to believe
That there's nobody out there
It's hard to believe
That I'm all alone
At least I have her love
The city she loves me
Lonely as I am
Together we cry

I don't ever want to feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way
I don't ever want to feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way (yeah yeah)
Ooh no (no no yeah yeah)
Love me I say yeah yeah

Under the bridge downtown
Is were I drew some blood
Under the bridge downtown
I could not get enough
Under the bridge downtown
Forgot about my love
Under the bridge downtown
I gave my life away (yeah yeah)
Ooh no (no no yeah yeah)
Here I stay yeah yeah

Here I stay

OASIS

oasis band.jpg oasis wonderwall.jpeg
Oasis were an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1991. Developed from an earlier group called the Rain, the band originally consisted of Liam Gallagher (vocals and tambourine), Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs (guitar), Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan (bass guitar) and Tony McCarroll (drums, percussion). They were later joined by Liam's older brother Noel Gallagher (lead guitar and vocals) as a fifth member. Oasis were most heavily influenced by The Beatles, an influence that was frequently labelled as an "obsession" by the British media.

Oasis signed to independent record label Creation Records in 1993 and released their record-setting debut album Definitely Maybe (1994). The following year the band recorded (What's the Story) Morning Glory? (1995) with their new drummer Alan White in the midst of rivalry with Britpop peers Blur in the charts. In 1997 Oasis released their third album, Be Here Now (1997), and although it became the fastest-selling album in UK chart history, the album's popularity tapered off quickly. McGuigan and Arthurs left Oasis in 1999 as the band went on to record and release Standing on the Shoulder of Giants (2000)

Definitely Maybe went straight to number one in the UK Albums Charts on initial release. It was the fastest selling debut album of all time in the UK when it was released and went on to be certified 7x Platinum by the BPI. Definitely Maybe marked the beginning of Oasis' success in America, selling over one million copies there. The album went on to sell over eight million copies worldwide and brought widespread critical acclaim.

(What's the Story) Morning Glory? - full album

"Wonderwall" is a song written by the band's guitarist and main songwriter Noel Gallagher. The song was produced by Owen Morris and Gallagher for their second album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory? According to Gallagher, the song describes "an imaginary friend who's gonna come and save you from yourself"
Today is gonna be the day that they're gonna throw it back to you
By now you shoulda, somehow, realized what you gotta do
I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now

Back beat, the word is on the street that the fire in your heart is out
I'm sure you've heard it all before but you never really had a doubt
I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now

And all the roads we have to walk are winding
And all the lights that lead us there are blinding
There are many things that I would like to say to you
But I don't know how

Because maybe
You're gonna be the one that saves me
And after all
You're my wonderwall

Today was gonna be the day but they'll never throw it back to you
By now you shoulda somehow realized what you're not to do
I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now

And all the roads that lead you there were winding
And all the lights that light the way are blinding
There are many things that I would like to say to you
But I don't know how

I said maybe
You're gonna be the one that saves me
And after all
You're my wonderwall

I said maybe
You're gonna be the one that saves me
And after all
You're my wonderwall

I said maybe
You're gonna be the one that saves me
You're gonna be the one that saves me
You're gonna be the one that saves me

EMINEM - Not afraid

[Chorus:]
I'm not afraid (I'm not afraid)
To take a stand (to take a stand)
Everybody (everybody)
Come take my hand (come take my hand)
We'll walk this road together, through the storm
Whatever weather, cold or warm
Just letting you know that you're not alone
Holler if you feel like you've been down the same road (same road)

[Intro (during Chorus):]
Yeah, it's been a ride
I guess I had to, go to that place, to get to this one
Now some of you, might still be in that place
If you're trying to get out, just follow me
I'll get you there
You can try and read my lyrics off of this paper before I lay 'em
But you won't take the sting out these words before I say 'em
Cause ain't no way I'ma let you stop me from causing mayhem
When I say I'ma do something I do it,
I don't give a damn what you think,
I'm doing this for me, so fuck the world
Feed it beans, it's gassed up, if it thinks it's stopping me
I'ma be what I set out to be, without a doubt undoubtedly
And all those who look down on me I'm tearing down your balcony
No ifs, ands or buts, don't try to ask him why or how can he
From "Infinite" down to the last "Relapse" album
He's still shitting, whether he's on salary paid hourly
Until he bows out or he shits his bowels out of him
Whichever comes first, for better or worse
He's married to the game, like a fuck you for Christmas
His gift is a curse, forget the Earth, he's got the urge
To pull his dick from the dirt, and fuck the whole universe

[Chorus]

Okay quit playing with the scissors and shit, and cut the crap
I shouldn't have to rhyme these words in the rhythm for you to know it's a rap
You said you was king, you lied through your teeth, for that
Fuck your fillings, instead of getting crowned you're getting capped
And to the fans, I'll never let you down again, I'm back
I promise to never go back on that promise, in fact
Let's be honest, that last "Relapse" CD was ehhh
Perhaps I ran them accents into the ground
Relax, I ain't going back to that now
All I'm trying to say is get back, click-clack, blow
Cause I ain't playing around
It's a game called circle and I don't know how, I'm way too up to back down
But I think I'm still trying to figure this crap out
Thought I had it mapped out but I guess I didn't, this fucking black cloud
Still follows me around but it's time to exorcise these demons
These motherfuckers are doing jumping jacks now!

[Chorus]

And I just can't keep living this way
So starting today, I'm breaking out of this cage
I'm standing up, I'ma face my demons
I'm manning up, I'ma hold my ground
I've had enough, now I'm so fed up
Time to put my life back together right now! (now)

It was my decision to get clean, I did it for me
Admittedly, I probably did it subliminally
For you, so I could come back a brand new me you helped see me through
And don't even realize what you did, 'cause believe me you
I been through the ringer, but they could do little to the middle finger
I think I got a tear in my eye, I feel like the king of
My world, haters can make like bees with no stingers
And drop dead, no more beef lingers
No more drama from now on, I promise
To focus solely on handling my responsibilities as a father
So I solemnly swear to always treat this roof, like my daughters
And raise it, you couldn't lift a single shingle on it!
Cause the way I feel, I'm strong enough to go to the club
Or the corner pub, and lift the whole liquor counter up
Cause I'm raising the bar
I'd shoot for the moon but I'm too busy gazing at stars
I feel amazing and I'm...

[Chorus]

COLDPLAY

After surfacing in 2000 with the breakthrough single "Yellow," Coldplay quickly became one of the biggest bands of the new millennium thanks to their simple acoustics and charming persons., honing a mix of introspective Brit-pop and anthemic rock that landed the British quartet a near-permanent residence on record charts worldwide.

MI0001688923.jpg

Parachutes, their debut album, was released in July 2000 and became a swift hit on the strength of four U.K. singles, several of which enjoyed popularity in America as well. With "Yellow" climbing the charts on both sides of the Atlantic, Parachutes was released in the U.S. in November, where its sales soon rivaled -- and eventually surpassed -- those in the U.K.

Riding on the strength of their universally popular debut, Coldplay headed back into the studio in fall 2001 to work on a sophomore album. They emerged with "A Rush of Blood to the Head", releasing the album worldwide in August 2002 and embarking on a global concert tour soon after. "The Scientist" enjoyed regular radio rotation, while both "Clocks" and "In My Place" won Grammy Awards.

Coldplay completed the recording of X&Y. "Speed of Sound" in spring 2005 and marked Coldplay's first single, selling more than eight million copies during its first year.

Such success put Coldplay on the same commercial level as U2, and Coldplay retreated to the studio in late 2006 to work with famed producer Brian Eno. Viva la Vida -- also known by its extended name, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends -- ultimately arrived in June 2008. Worldwide sales for the album had approached six million by November.

Preceded by first single "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall," Coldplay's fifth studio album, 2011's Mylo Xyloto, comes "Live 2012", the band's second concert film/recording, followed in 2012 after a hugely successful world tour, which included a special performance at the London Paralympics closing ceremony. Work began on their sixth album in late 2012 at their Bakery and Beehive studios in North London, where longtime producers Paul Epworth, Daniel Green, and Rik Simpson joined them for sessions. The album, titled Ghost Stories, was due for release in 2014.

LINKIN PARK

Linkin Park.jpgMeh, Linkin Park…who hasn’t heard of them? One of the most famous bands ever. Well, it is pretty hard to explain what kind of music they do, like nu metal, alternative rock, hard rock and rap of course – I think it is different for every person. Their very first album (Hybrid Theory) was released in 2000. Since then, they have been getting more and more successful. Their last studio album was Living Things, but they also released a real treasure in 2014 called The Hunting Party. The band stands: Mike Shinoda (rap, guitar, piano, vocal), Chester Bennington (lead singer, guitar), Joseph Hahn (DJ), Brad Nelson (guitar) and David Michael Farrell (bass guitar). They were the first rock band that achieved more than 1 million Youtube hits. Since Linkin Park exists, they have sold more than 60 million albums and won 2 Grammys…should I keep going? No, because the only way you understand these glorious guys if you listen closely.

linkin park_logo.jpg
Their logo became so famous that dozens of fans tattooed it on their body.

CATALYST BY LINKIN PARK
No, not the most famous song (which is actually the Numb), but maybe the most meaningful song made by them. Nobody can explain exactly what it means or who is it for. Maybe it is for everybody. Maybe not. It has political criticism, judgment for the person itself. One thing is for sure: no matter how people understand it, this is a real hit.
The clip of this song is really interesting, too. It has no easy-to-understand-story-line, but that was one of the hardest shoot for them. They show us how they did it in another video. Definitely worth checking it out.

God bless us everyone
We're a broken people living under loaded gun
And it can't be out fought, it can't be outdone
It can't be outmatched, it can't be outrun, no
(x2)

And when I close my eyes tonight
To symphonies of blinding light
God bless us everyone
We're a broken people living under loaded gun

Like memories in cold decay
Transmissions echoing away
Far from the world of you and I
Where oceans bleed into the sky

God save us everyone
Will we burn inside the fires of a thousand suns?
For the sins of our hand, the sins of our tongue
The sins of our father, the sins of our young, no
(x2)

And when I close my eyes tonight
To symphonies of blinding light
God save us everyone
When we burn inside the fires of a thousand suns, oh

Like memories in cold decay
Transmissions echoing away
Far from the world of you and I
Where oceans bleed into the sky
(x2)

Lift me up, let me go
(x10)

(And it can't be out fought, it can't be outdone)
(It can't outmatched, it can't be outrun, no)
Lift me up, let me go

God bless us everyone
We're a broken people living under loaded gun
And it can't be out fought, it can't be outdone
It can't outmatched, it can't be outrun, no

Lift me up, let me go
(God bless us everyone)
(We're a broken people living under loaded gun)
Lift me up, let me go
(And it can't be out fought, it can't be outdone)
(It can't outmatched, it can't be outrun, no)

If you don’t know The Catalyst and want to scream a real Linkin Park song, pick Numb.

Their first major hit was the 2003 single "Where Is the Love?" from Elephunk, which topped the charts in 13 countries, including the United Kingdom, where it spent seven weeks at number one and went on to become Britain's biggest selling single of 2003. Another European hit single from the album was "Shut Up". Their fourth album, Monkey Business, was an even bigger worldwide success, certified 4× Platinum in the U.S., and spawning four singles, "Don't Phunk with My Heart", "Don't Lie", "My Humps" and "Pump It". The album The E.N.D. later produced a third Hot 100 number-one placement with "Imma Be", making the group one of few to ever place three number one singles on the chart from the same album, before being followed with "Rock That Body" and "Meet Me Halfway", which peaked in the Top 10 of the Hot 100. "I Gotta Feeling" became the first single to sell more than one million downloads in the United Kingdom.
The Black Eyed Peas were ranked 12th on Billboard's Decade-End Chart Artist of the Decade. In November 2010, they released the album The Beginning. The album's first two singles, "The Time (Dirty Bit)" and "Just Can't Get Enough", became international hits and topped the charts in many countries. The single "Don't Stop the Party" became an international hit too.
